Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Urban poverty, characterized by the lack of adequate resources and opportunities in rapidly growing cities, remains a significant challenge in Nigeria. In Lokoja North Local Government Area, Kogi State, urban poverty manifests in various forms, including inadequate housing, limited access to quality healthcare, and unemployment (Adeyemo & Garba, 2023). Films, as a mass medium, have the potential to raise awareness about these issues and encourage both policy changes and grassroots mobilization. Nigerian films, especially those produced by Nollywood, have increasingly tackled social issues, portraying the lived experiences of impoverished urban communities and highlighting systemic causes of poverty (Danjuma & Olusola, 2024). This study explores how film can address urban poverty in Lokoja North by raising awareness, influencing attitudes, and possibly inspiring social change.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the power of film to highlight societal issues, the specific role of films in addressing urban poverty in Lokoja North is under-researched. While films might serve as a tool for advocacy and social change, it is unclear whether their portrayal of poverty has led to any tangible improvements in the lives of the urban poor in this region (Ahmed & Musa, 2023). This study seeks to understand how films influence public perception of urban poverty and whether they inspire concrete actions to address its root causes in Lokoja North.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze how films depict the challenges of urban poverty in Lokoja North.
  2. To assess the impact of films in raising awareness about urban poverty issues in Lokoja North.
  3. To evaluate the role of films in influencing policy decisions and community mobilization regarding urban poverty.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do films portray the challenges of urban poverty in Lokoja North?
  2. To what extent do films raise awareness about the causes and effects of urban poverty?
  3. How can films contribute to policy change and community efforts to address urban poverty?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Films provide a realistic portrayal of urban poverty in Lokoja North.
  2. Films play a significant role in raising awareness about urban poverty.
  3. Films have an influence on policy and community efforts aimed at addressing urban poverty.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study highlights the role of film as a tool for social change, particularly in addressing urban poverty in Nigerian cities. The findings will be beneficial to filmmakers, policymakers, and NGOs working on poverty alleviation initiatives, offering strategies to harness media for advocacy.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the role of films in addressing urban poverty in Lokoja North Local Government Area, Kogi State, with particular emphasis on Nollywood productions.
